Nils Oskar Anderson was born on September 15, 1876, in Fredrikstad, Østfold, Norway1 to Anders Nilsen and Karen Lovise Johansdotter. He immigrated to the United States in 1902 and married Hulda Matilde Hansen in 1907.2
Hulda was also born in Fredrikstad on June 27, 1884,3 to Martin Hansen and Karen Oline Petersendatter4 and immigrated to the United States in 1904.5
In April of 1910, Nils and Hulda were living with their two daughters Clara, age 2, and Nellie, 4 months old, in Duluth City, Minnesota.6 Some time after April 1910 and before June 1917, Nils and Hulda moved to Butte where Nils died in the Granite Mountain Speculator Mine Fire on June 8, 1917.7 At the time of his death, his daughter Clara was 9 years old and his daughter Nellie was 7.
On June 11, 1917, Nils was still unaccounted for, as stated in a news article from The Butte Daily Post.
He was finally listed as one of the “unidentified dead” in the “Official List” published in the Anaconda Standard on June 28th.8
Nils’s remains are most likely buried in the plot for the “unidentified dead” in Mountain View Cemetery, located at 3910 Harrison Avenue in Butte, Montana. 9
About a year after his death, Hulda married Nils’s younger brother, Carl Anderson.10 The family relocated to Seattle where Hulda died on March 15, 1960.11
